QUIET sobs shaking his lean frame woke me in the early hours of the morning. Gently, I turned him to face me, brushing his silken hair from his face. He lay with his face to my torso, his arms crossed over his chest as if to protect his grieving heart.
“Why? Why, Jaxon? Why did she have to die? She was my friend, my family. Why does just about everyone I love die or leave? What did I do?”
The heartbroken rasp of his voice, along with his childlike pleas, was almost my undoing. Only the thought of him needing me to be strong for him helped me keep it together.
“I don’t know why, Liam. I wish I could give you an answer, but I just don’t know. All I can tell you is that I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere. I will never leave you.”
I squeezed him a little tighter and placed a featherlight kiss on his forehead, welcoming it when he drew himself even closer into my embrace.
“I missed them, Jax. She had two ticks on her, and I missed them! How could I have not found them? It’s my fault. She’s dead, and it’s my fault!” he wailed brokenly as he sobbed into my chest.
“Baby, you didn’t do it on purpose. Accidents happen. Please don’t blame yourself. The little I know about ticks is that they are small and can be really hard to detect. Please don’t crucify yourself over this. Duchess wouldn’t want you to. She loved you.”
“I want her back, Jax. I want her back,” he whispered shakily as his tears continued to coat my chest.
“I know you do, baby, I know. I wish I could bring her back for you. I really do. I’m going to miss her too.”
The lump of emotion in my throat made my voice sound strange to my own ears. I wished I could summon some magic words to take away his pain. I hated feeling so powerless. It saddened me immeasurably that the first time I really had Liam in my arms was to offer solace instead of passion. The first time I could allow myself to kiss his forehead, caress his smooth skin, or stroke my fingers through the soft strands of his hair wasn’t because I was making love to him, but because I was consoling him. My heart ached to tell him I loved him, would always love him, but I knew this wasn’t the time.
The room lightened as the new day dawned. Reluctantly, I disengaged myself, whispering softly, “I’m going to make us both a cup of tea. I’ll be back in a minute.”
Smoothing his unruly hair away from his face, I let myself kiss his forehead one last time before I climbed out of the bed.
When I returned with a tray of tea and toast, Liam was sitting up in the bed, propped against some pillows. My heart constricted painfully at the sight of his pale, wan face and the dark shadows under his haunted eyes.
